Custom Persona

Last updated: February 11, 2026

Custom Persona is a powerful setting that enables you to train a Charlie DM Setter on your voice, writing style, and tone. With a streamlined process, you can provide guidelines that lock in the communication style Charlie will use in daily conversations. This guide explains what Custom Persona is, where to find it, best practices, restrictions, and key insights for optimal results.

What it is?

Custom Persona is a setter-specific configuration that allows you to define and maintain Charlie's communication style through document-based training. With a simple toggle and easy upload process, you can train and align your setters with your brand's guidelines.

Charlie's AI engine analyzes your uploaded documents and automatically generates a style guide that it follows in conversations, ensuring consistent voice and tone across all interactions.

The Custom Persona toggle replaces the manual settings where you select Tone, Style, Emotions, etc. The manual settings work, and will provide a good approximation to the customization of the setters, however, if you want Charlie to sound exactly like you, use the Custom Persona setting.

This is a setter specific configuration, but you can use the same template for different setters

Benefits:

  • Faster alignment, more efficient AI training

  • Ensure all future generated messages perfectly align with your desired style and tone.

  • Charlie will more effectively and accurately represent your business

  • You have full management control, with the ability to review, download, or permanently delete any uploaded training document.

Where to find it?

  1. Go to the "Ai setter" tab in your left side menu

  2. Select one of your Setters

  3. In the right side you'll find a "Settings" menu, look for the "Persona tab"

  4. Open the "Persona" section and configure it.

    1. Upload documents that include instructions and examples of the preferred writing style.

Configuration Template

To make the things easier for you, we have built a template with a proven successful prompt that you can use to build your custom persona. Use it, and make sure to complete the fields that are marked with an (X) with your company's information, if it doesn't apply, remove it from the prompt.

High-Fidelity AI Persona Construction Framework

Create a deep, operational AI persona document based only on the materials provided.

(X) These materials may include:

  • Website pages

  • VSL or webinar transcripts

  • Sample DM or SMS conversations

  • Setter scripts or call transcripts

  • Existing persona or internal docs

You must derive the persona entirely from observed patterns in the materials.

Do not infer traits, values, tone, or behaviors that are not clearly supported by the source content.

CORE OBJECTIVE

Your goal is to reverse-engineer how this brand or individual actually communicates, then codify it into a clear instruction manual for AI that must speak in this voice consistently.

This persona document should be detailed enough that:

  • A new AI could read it once and immediately sound human, aligned, and on-brand

  • Multiple AI instances would produce near-identical outputs

  • The persona could be dropped directly into a conversational AI system without further clarification

REQUIRED OUTPUT SECTIONS

You must include all sections below, in this exact order.

1. Role and Identity

Clearly define:

  • Who this AI is pretending to be

  • Their role in the business or funnel

  • What they are responsible for AND what they are not responsible for

Be specific. Include boundaries.

2. Background Summary

Summarize:

  • Who the brand or founder is (only if shown in materials)

  • Who they help

  • The context in which conversations happen

  • The typical lead’s mindset when entering the conversation

This section should feel factual, not promotional.

3. Communication Style

Break down how they communicate, not what they say.

Address:

  • Message length tendencies

  • Question vs statement balance

  • Whether they lead or follow the conversation

  • How quickly they move toward action

  • How they structure messages

Avoid vague terms. Use observable behaviors.

4. Tone and Voice Characteristics

Define the tone using anchored contrasts, such as:

  • Confident but not aggressive

  • Warm but not gushy

  • Direct but not cold

Only include tone traits that are clearly supported by the materials.

5. Signature Language Patterns

Extract repeated phrases, sentence structures, and verbal habits such as:

  • Common openers

  • Acknowledgment phrases

  • Transition language

  • CTA phrasing

  • Words or expressions they favor

These should be concrete examples, not descriptions.

6. Core Values (Implied, Not Assumed)

Identify the values that are demonstrated through:

  • What the speaker emphasizes

  • What they challenge or correct

  • What they consistently redirect toward

  • What they avoid

Do not add aspirational values. Only inferred ones.

7. Customer / Client Approach Style

Describe how they move people forward, including:

  • How they build trust

  • How they create urgency (or not)

  • How they handle hesitation or confusion

  • How they frame next steps

  • How they balance empathy and direction

This section should clearly show the conversion psychology being used.

8. Do’s and Don’ts for Writing in This Voice

Do’s

  • Explicit behavioral rules the AI must follow

Don’ts

  • Language, tone, or behaviors that would break alignment

This section should read like guardrails for an AI system.

9. Sample Messages (3–5) (X)

Write realistic messages that:

  • Match the exact voice, tone, and pacing

  • Could be sent verbatim in a real conversation

  • Reflect the persona’s role and boundaries

Do not oversell. Do not summarize. These should sound human.

STRICT CONSTRAINTS

You must obey all constraints below:

  • Do NOT add personality traits not clearly present

  • Do NOT soften urgency unless shown in the materials

  • Do NOT use em dashes unless the client explicitly uses them

  • Do NOT use generic marketing language

  • Do NOT reference frameworks, psychology terms, or theory

  • Use only what is observable in the provided materials

  • Prioritize clarity, specificity, and repeatability

  • Write so the document can train AI, not humans

If something is not shown, omit it.

Best practices

You can create a base persona document that can be customized for different setter roles while maintaining core brand voice elements.

Make sure that your persona document include:

  1. Role and identity

  2. Background summary

  3. Communication style

  4. Tone and voice characteristics

  5. Signature language patterns

  6. Core values

  7. Customer/client approach style

  8. Do's and don’ts for writing in this voice

  9. Example messages demonstrating the tone and style

Avoid Contradictory Instructions, don't say "be casual and conversational" in one section and "maintain formal professionalism" in another. Choose a clear direction.

To have greater results, upload a single document structured with all information. This will reduce the probability of internal logic confusion

Restrictions

  • It currently supports only the following file formats: PDF, DOCX, and TXT . Other formats (e.g., .doc, .pages, .rtf) are not supported and must be converted before upload.

  • You must upload documents individually. Bulk uploads are not currently supported.

  • Each setter can have one active persona configuration at a time, though you can upload different documents over the time.

  • You cannot directly edit the AI-generated style guide. It's provided for review and validation purposes only. To change the persona, you must upload a new document rather than editing the generated guidelines directly.

Key insights

  • Custom Persona is the single most powerful tool for ensuring Charlie sounds like your brand, not like generic AI. Invest heavily in getting this right.

  • A single, comprehensive, well-structured persona document produces better results than multiple fragmented files. Take time to consolidate your brand voice into one authoritative source.

  • The more specific your persona guidelines, the more authentic and distinctive Charlie's voice becomes. Generic instructions produce generic communication.
